BDSM Basics: Beginner’s BDSM on a Budget

I have written this article with beginners in mind, so for those of us that are more seasoned, you may not learn anything new by reading this, but, then again, you might, and we all had to start somewhere! If you’ve ever been to an adult toy store, or shopped online for toys, I’m sure most of us have noticed something. Unless you have quite a bit of disposable income, a lot of these things are pretty expensive, not to mention some being straight up laughable.

A neoprene spreader bar that feels as flimsy as a child’s plastic school ruler? For $40? That’s supposed to keep me from closing my legs? Guilty.

I don’t know about you, but I have made my share of questionable purchases throughout the years. I have learned my lesson the hard way when it comes to getting the most for your money. I am hoping I can share some experience, and maybe help you make a few less impulse buys when it comes to some things in the wonderful world of sex toys, that are often highlighted in the world of BDSM.

I will start with paddles, whips, and the like. There are many to be found, in all shapes, sizes, materials, and colors, some online stores even have the option for personalizing them. To be sure, the art of spanking and such is so common, I have heard quite a few say it was their first step outside the ‘vanilla’ realm of sex. Prices vary much, anywhere from around $15 to upwards of even $100. If you just want to explore spanking, a very cheap way to do it (other than hands, which are awesome and free!) is to take a trip to the paint department for a five gallon wooden paint stirrer. (Or two, as you can stack them together for extra sensation!) These are usually about 30 cents a piece, and sometimes even free! They are flexible enough to not snap on impact. They are also a great ‘in-between’ of whips and paddles, because less skin is affected than in the reverberating hit of most paddles, which are wider in general, and the sting is less intense than a thin whip. Thus, you might be able to tell pretty easily whether you want to invest in a whip, or a paddle instead, all for under a dollar.

Nipple play is a common theme for beginners as well. First off, Nipple play is not just for women, in case there are a few of us who have never thought about it fully. I have found that men are just as likely to enjoy nipple play as most women, and I have known women who didn’t like it as well. Nipple clamps are just about the most common toy there is in this area. Some are adjustable, vibrating, light or heavy, or big or small. Endless variation. The price for them can be as little as $12, I have spent more than $30 on a pair, and I have seen them priced to as high as $60, sometimes more, as they can get pretty extravagant.  Always look in the item description when ordering these online, specifically for size dimensions and the weight of the product, as some (especially the vibrating ones with batteries) can fall right off if not clamped tight. By tight, I mean it might not be in your wallet’s best interest to invest if you are just starting out your exploration in nipple play! I highly recommend a one dollar package of clothespins for experimenting and exploring nipple play. In my experience, the wooden ones don’t pinch as tightly as the plastic ones, so use your own judgement on what particular type you get. They are not just for nipples, either! Most of us have probably seen pictures of people covered with them in a line across their body. Some even pinch in a line of rope or string along with the clothespins, and then rip them off in an instant by pulling the string. Be careful doing that your first time, by the way!

Speaking of rope and string, there are shoe strings, some elastic bands, including hair bands and some scrunchies, sheets, any number of things you can use for beginning bondage play, that are probably just laying around your house in all their innocent glory! May I recommend discretion with the duct tape, however! A king size pillow case rolled up or folded loosely lengthwise makes a great blindfold in a few seconds, top it off with a pair of swimmer’s earplugs for a couple of bucks, and you can experience basic sensory deprivation play in less than a minute.

Be creative, look at things differently, and don’t hesitate to experiment and learn what you like. Do use forethought, however, as you don’t want to have to call your doctor, or make an embarrassing, and possibly painful trip to the ER. (We’ve all heard those horror stories.) You will see that it won’t take you long, or break your bank, to experience what you want to. You may also find out, that you don’t have to go to an adult store at all, because what you’re looking for may just be in the housewares section, or even at the hardware store.

There are many more tips and tricks than these, I’m sure, and I would love to hear what some of your favorites are! Don’t hesitate to share, even if you do so anonymously by sending us a message through our Facebook page. We may all be able to save a little bit more of our hard earned cash!

About misssubmistressrose

Hello Everyone! I am a stay at home mom of 2 boys, ages 2 and 10. Been married to my awesome husband for 5 years now! We have 3 cats and a huge golden retriever in our family, too. My husband and I have been exploring the world of BDSM almost as long as weve been together, and I started my exploration in my teens, probably when I should've been studying! Its a wonderful part of our lives, and I enjoy each new discovery. In my spare time, (if I have any!) I really like to garden, and watch cheesey singing auditions on youtube, lol. I cook from scratch nearly every night, and do couponing, which not only satisfies my need to be "Suzie Home-maker", it helps fill in the money blanks as well, and doesnt everyone need to save money these days?! I am very much looking forward to contributing here as an author and forum motivator, this site offers so much in the way of education and satisfying the inquiring minds within all of us! I look forward to meeting and interacting with all of you ;)

  2. Definitely agree! We also have a Total Gym with all the attachments 😉 The best thing about it other than the possibilities, is the fact it can be stored under the bed.

  3. Ummm, a weight bench that has adjustable back and removable preacher-bar-pad can be used for many, many bondage positions. There’s so many places to tie someone’s legs or arms. Do be careful and plan ahead (find what positions work ahead of time) but if you don’t want to invest in a lot of dungeon stuff (and who has the room for that?) you might find that a weight bench works well.
